Ford Motor Company unveiled its biggest secret project in years on Wednesday night at a media event in CEO Jim Farley’s private garage in Monterey: a Mustang supercar that will compete against the most advanced machinery from Europe. The 2025 Mustang GTD is called Ford “the most audacious and advanced Mustang ever.”

The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD is fundamentally a limited-edition, street-legal high-performance vehicle. With a design based on the GT3, which debuted earlier this year, the team started developing in 2021, intending to compete against European sports cars. With a goal Nürburgring time of less than seven minutes, it is intended to be the quickest road-going Mustang in history. The GTD has been extensively wrapped in carbon fiber, including the fenders, hood, trunk lid, door sills, front splitter, rear diffuser, and roof. The business will also offer optional carbon fiber front and rear fascias. Additional carbon fiber components will be part of the optional aero package.

A modified version of the engine found in the Shelby GT500, the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD’s “purpose-developed” supercharged 5.2L V8 with dual air inlets powers the car. The GTD will be the most potent Mustang ever, though, and is predicted to have at least 800 horsepower under the hood. It also has the first dry-sump oil system ever installed in a road-going Mustang. For increased stiffness, the front suspension incorporates short long arms.

With an integral link pushrod and rocker arm rear suspension layout, inboard Adaptive Spool Valve shock absorbers, and coil springs, things get even crazier out back. A carbon fiber driveshaft coupled to an eight-speed dual-clutch rear transaxle allowed the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD to feature a nearly 50/50 weight distribution between the front and back. The GTD has a nearly four-inch wider rear track than a normal GT, thanks to the semi-active suspension, which can change spring rates and ride height.

Complete customization information is still pending; however, the manufacturer has stated that the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD would come with a variety of interior options. Additionally, a number of special edition exterior packages will be available, and customers can order them in any color they like. Flat Rock Assembly will start making the GTD, and MultiMate’s facilities in Markham, Canada, will finish it up. About 2,000 units will be made, with prices starting at $300,000. The car will go on sale in late 2024 or early 2025. Similar to the GT before it, prospective owners will need to submit an application to Ford.

20-inch forged aluminum (or forged magnesium) wheels with enormous 325 mm front and 345 mm rear tires complement the clever new suspension. Brembo carbon ceramic brakes conceal the aggressive wheel and tire combination. Cooling ducts are placed below the rear suspension to help with cooling the rear brakes.

“Mustang GTD defies all expectations of what a supercar should be. For us, this is a novel strategy. Instead of designing a road car for the track, we built a race car. Jim Farley, CEO of Ford, stated that Mustang GTD “takes racing technology from our Mustang GT3 race car, wraps it in a carbon fiber Mustang body, and unleashes it for the street.”
